Electronic cigarettes (also known as e-cigarettes or personal vaporizers) are an alternative to tobacco cigarettes. They are battery-operated devices that create a mist or vapor that is inhaled instead of smoke. The rechargeable battery powers a heating element called an "atomizer." The element uses low heat to turn liquid in the cartridge, which contains propylene glycol, glycerin, food flavoring and nicotine, into a fog-like mist. There are many models of e-cigarettes available. Some look like traditional cigarettes, others look similar to a pen and some even look like small flashlights. Some have LED lights, some have built-in liquid reservoirs, others have combined atomizer cartridges, some are tubular and some are even rectangular boxes. They come in all shapes and sizes and have different features for former smokers who wish to distance themselves from anything resembling a traditional cigarette or want a longer battery life and/or better performance.
E-juice is made of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavoring, and nicotine (should you prefer it). PG is an FDA approved liquid that is used in consumer products ranging from food products to medicine. It is used as a vehicle for delivering flavoring and nicotine. PG is responsible for the throat hit. VG is also an FDA approved liquid that provides the smoke-like vapor when atomized. Finally, different flavorings are used to create delicious flavors. The flavorings are the same as those found in candies, cupcakes and sodas. Nicotine is an optional ingredient (this also affects throat hit). We only use 100% USP, Kosher, Food Grade PG and VG. All of our ingredients are made in the USA.
PG/VG ratio, in short, is the blend of the two main components of e-liquid. PG, or propylene glycol, is responsible for carrying the flavor throughout the juice, and also contributes to throat hit. VG, or vegetable glycerin, is mainly responsible for the vapor output produced and the juice's thickness. Typically for most tanks, we suggest using around 50/50 or 40/60 blend e-liquids, they tend to be thinner and flow better into the wicks. For rebuild able atomizers, or sub-ohm tanks, most prefer to use a thicker blend, or MAX VG juices, because the wicking mechanisms are much better on these devices they can handle thicker liquids being used on them. Everyone has their own preference on PG/VG ratios and it is mostly opinion based as to which they end up using. Some people may have a slight allergic reaction to PG, and in those situations it is recommended to switch to max vg, or high vg juices to avoid irritation.
To get started, you're going to need a few things. You'll first need a battery device to support power to your e-cig (Beginner batteries can be found in our "Ego Batteries" drop down menu). Then you'll need a tank to sit on top of the battery (which can be found under the subsection "Clearomizers"). It would also be a good idea to pick up a few extra coils for your tank so that when one burns out and starts getting old, you can replace it right away. Picking up a charger for your battery is a must as well, so that when it is dead, it can be quickly recharged for your vaping needs. The only thing left to get is some delicious E-Liquid. Determining your nicotine strength isn't as scary as many sites may make it out to be, and the way we always like to equate it is based on what kind of cigarettes you were smoking. To put it simply, a light cigarette is roughly 12mg of nicotine, while a "full-flavored" is about 18mg. It's important to note that the level of nicotine in your juice will not only affect your cravings for it, but also your throat-hit (the burning feeling in the back of your throat when you inhale a cigarette). For a heavier throat hit, most tend to go for the higher nicotine, and vice versa. If you are still unsure of what strength to use, go one level lower and try it out, if it is not enough you can always move upwards, if it is too strong, then move downwards. As you move to a more advanced set-up, you will be vaping more e-liquid in volume, due to higher-end devices being more powerful, and thus with a heavier consumption rate, nicotine level should be decreased accordingly.
A variable voltage/wattage device is a battery that can adjust the output to either increase or decrease vapor production based on how you set it. The difference between the two is that voltage will be the same regardless of any other factors on your e-cigarette. A variable wattage device will use a calculation to figure out how many volts to apply to your coil in order to get you desired output in wattage. The calculations are explained below.
Ohm's Law is a series of calculations used to measure electrical current. The main equation used when referring to e-cigarettes are:
1.) Current in Amperes = Voltage / Resistance
2.) Power in Wattage = (Voltage x Voltage) / Resistance
Now, the reason these are used is, for example, you have a variable voltage battery set at 4.8 volts, and the coil in your tank is 1.8 ohms of resistance. You can use the formula (V x V) / R to determine that your output in wattage is 12.8 Watts, which may be a little too much for your liking, or not enough. And therefore, you can use these formulas to figure out which variables to increase or decrease in order to be inside your preferred vaping range. Ohm's law becomes especially important when dealing with rebuildable atomizers and rebuildable tanks.
Mechanical Mods are an unregulated alternative to other vaping devices, and can be used to completely customize your vaping experience. The mechanical mod itself, is just a metal tube (usually copper, or copper lined for maximum conductivity) that houses a single 18650, or 26650 Li-Mn Battery Cell (Sold under the "Mod Batteries" subsection). The cell is then discharged when the button on the bottom is pressed in, and the current is send up to the tank/rebuildable atomizer seated on top of the mod. Now those batteries only output at most, 4.2 volts of power and that is why they are usually paired with a rebuildable atomizer. Rebuildable atomizers allow the user to wrap their own customized coils with resistance wire, to determine how much resistance should be on their coils, this allows the user to determine the overall vapor production from the mod. Due to the nature of these devices, and the safety concerns that follow incorrect or unsafe usage, these are for advanced users only and they should have a good understanding of Ohm's Law, before usage. Many tutorials are available online to view on how to build coils properly and ensure user safety.
To start your mechanical mod set-up, you'll need the Mechanical Mods itself, Li-Mn batteries (18650, 26650, 18350, etc.), Kanthal wire (preferably USA made), Organic Cotton, a rebuildable atomizer or a low resistance/high wattage tank (such as the Horizon Arctic, Aspire Atlantis or Kanger Subtank), and a Li-Mn battery charger.
